NZTA project wins international award

The Transport Agency has won an international award for its environmentally friendly road de-icing initiative.

It's been selected as the winner of the 2012 International Roading Federationâ s Global Road Achievement Award in the Environmental Mitigation category.

NZTA spokesman Colin Crampton says the winning project identified an effective, environmentally-friendly chemical de-icing solution for New Zealandâ s roads without compromising the protection of nearby soil, vegetation and waterways.

He says they're using Calcium Magnesium Acetate instead of salt which is universally used, but was discontinued here in the early 1980â s because of concerns for the environment and its effects on vehicles.
