Cyclists are being warned of the dangers of texting while riding. It comes after a number of close calls in Tauranga in recent weeks, with cyclists veering in front of cars as they were texting. Head of Western Bay of Plenty road policing, Senior Sergeant Ian Campion, says texting whilst cycling is not only stupid but also illegal. He says it is prohibited to use a mobile phone while operating a vehicle, and a bicycle is classed as a vehicle. And like motorists, cyclists caught texting while riding face an $80 fine.
