A milestone for the ongoing Rena cleanup as seven little blue penguins were released by the National Oiled Wildlife Response Team today.
It marks the last major release of affected wildlife.
The penguins were all Motiti Island birds, and were released near the island from a boat.
They had been cared for at the cleaning and rehabilitation facility set up at Massey University.
At the height of the response 400 birds were being care for and now just two remain.
The oil spill response is continuing with around 60 to 70 people in the field every day assessing the coastline and cleaning residual oil.
