A number of political parties want serious consideration given to banning smoking in cars.
It comes as the Government considers increasing excise tax on tobacco in this month's Budget.
The Maori Party, Greens and Mana all support that, as well as other measures that would help make the country smokefree by 2025.
Greens co-leader Metiria Turei says the industry needs to be highly regulated, and banning smoking in cars could be one way to go.
"I think that we need to give that serious consideration, it is a major health issue for children, for those who are involved in that family. I don't think we can regulate in people's homes that easily, but I do think there is an issue around cars."
