Potential for oil spill after crane collapses

By: Natasha Burling | New Zealand News | Wednesday August 8 2012 17:53

A crane has capsized on a barge in Milford Sound.

The crane fell on its side at Freshwater Basin this afternoon, leaving the body of it on the barge and part of the boom resting on a pile.

There's understood to be 200 litres of diesel and 24 litres of engine oil in the crane, and 1,600 litres of hydraulic oil in a power pack on the barge.

Environment Southland is putting measures in place to deal with a potential oil spill.

Booms have been set out around the barge and more equipment and manpower has been sent from Bluff and Invercargill.
