The health sector's being challenged to do more to help cancer survival rates for Maori. It follows a report out today which shows while there's been significant success in improving survival rates across the board in New Zealand, there's still a gaping inequality between Maori and non-Maori. Otago University's Professor Tony Blakely acknowledges there are some factors which are difficult to change, like the fact Maori are more susceptible to chronic lung disease. "There are however other things that we could do something about more immediately and that includes getting people through the services in a timely manner and for example, getting their chemotherapy as quickly as possible."
