Work begins to reopen Aus detention centres

By: AAP | International News | Saturday August 18 2012 6:20

Four years after the Rudd Government shut them down, work has begun to reopen the Nauru and Manus Island detention centre facilities.

But the centres already face pressure with nine boats carrying more than 500 people arriving since Monday, when the government announced offshore processing would resume, after a report by former defence chief Angus Houston.

Home Affairs Minister Jason Clare says anyone arriving by boat without a visa runs the risk of being transferred to a regional processing country.
