Tornadoes head toward Oklahoma

By: Newstalk ZB staff | International News | Sunday April 15 2012 8:37

Tornadoes have touched down in the US state of Oklahoma...but experts say they're just the advance party.

Roofs have been torn off houses and power lines and trees were brought down.

But as Sky's Mike Tobin reports, forecasters have issued a rare warning saying much worse twisters are on the way.

"In this part of the United States people generally don't build basements in their houses. If a big tornado comes the only chance you really have to survive it if it hits your house is to be down low, down in the basement.

"These people out here, although they don't have basements, they have storm shelters. So the people in these neighbourhoods are being encouraged, know your neighbours, know who has a storm shelter, and make a plan."
