Afghanistan interpreters seeking asylum

A former Immigration Minister says Afghanistan interpreters working with New Zealand forces against the Taliban may have a case for seeking sanctuary in New Zealand.

The interpreters are seeking asylum saying they're targets of the Taliban for working with the Kiwis, and once the forces leave Afghanistan they'll be killed.

Aussie Malcolm says if they seek protection, there's probably room for a discreet political decision that will give protection to some people who are good friends.

"These people have become mates. They've worked alongside and worked with New Zealand military in a dangerous situation and sometimes you've just go to look after your mates quietly."

Mr Malcolm says they won't qualify as asylum seekers until they leave their country.
