Australian parliament votes to reopen detention centres

By: ARN | International News | Wednesday August 15 2012 19:42

Refugee activists are outraged that the lower house of Australia's Parliament has approved the return of offshore processing.

MPs have voted to reopen the detention centres on Manus Island and Nauru in an attempt to stem the flood of boat people.

Ian Rintoul from the Refugee Action Coalition says it will see some asylum seekers remain in detention indefinitely.

"Essentially what the Government is doing is worse than what refugees faced under the Howard Government. There is no cap, effectively the Government has created a penal colony."
