For the first time ever, New Zealand's offering one of its formal honours to a Turkish citizen.

The former deputy Governor of Canakkale, Ali Partal's been invested as a honorary member of the New Zealand Order of Merit.

He's receiving the award in recognition of his work supporting ANZAC Day commemorations at Gallipoli between 2005 and 2011.
