Repeat child sex offenders in Queensland will receive a mandatory sentence of life imprisonment with a minimum non-parole period of 20 years. The tough new laws were passed last night and will only apply to serious sex offenders who have previously been convicted of a sex crime that's punishable by life imprisonment, such as rape. The mandatory sentence will be imposed on those offenders who commit another serious offence while on parole. Queensland Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie says the laws are a clear illustration of the Government's responsiveness to community outrage at sentences imposed on child sex offenders. |
