Mexico votes for new president today

By: Newstalk ZB staff | International News | Monday July 2 2012 7:54

Mexico votes for a new president today.

Sky reports the front runner is the man promising to bring down the country's horrific death toll in its drug war - a war that's killed 50,000 people since 2006.

But Enrique Pena Nieto is also the face of the party that ruled Mexico for most of the past century and was tainted by corruption, electoral fraud and occasional bouts of brutal authoritarianism.

It was voted out in 2000 but has bounced back, helped by the economic malaise and a tide of lawlessness that have plagued Mexico under the conservative National Action Party.
