A former New Zealand diplomat to the European Union says the fact it's been given the Nobel Peace Prize, is a reminder of its importance in the world. The Nobel Committee announced its decision overnight, recognising 60 years since the beginnings of the organisation. Victoria University's fellow Terence O'Brien says despite its economic problems, the EU remains an important achievement. "Of the last century in bringing Europe together as a force for stability and wellbeing in the world at large." "It is worrying that our current Government seems to have in mind the idea of diminishing our diplomatic and political representation in Europe." Terence O'Brien says it's short-sighted given the nature of New Zealand's interests in the world. He says an important part of those interests centre in and around Europe. Photo: Getty Images |
