Search fails to find missing men off Tonga

| International News | Saturday June 16 2012 17:53

A second day of searching has failed to find two men missing off Tonga after their yacht was wrecked.

An Australian and an Englishman - both in their sixties - called a relative on Thursday night to say they'd run aground west of Vava'u and their 15m yacht Navillus was breaking up.

Rescue Coordination Centre spokeswoman in New Zealand Sophie Hazelhurst says conditions were good and the search crews were confident they would have seen the men if they had been in the water.

"Today a local fishing vessel searched waters near the island and a fixed-wing aircraft also conducted an aerial search primarily focusing over the island and its coastline. Unfortunately no sign of the two men was found."

Ms Hazelhurst says tomorrow a search team will be sent to the island to do a comprehensive search of the shoreline.
