Two asylum seeker boats intercepted

By: AAP | International News | Sunday June 10 2012 6:30

The federal opposition says some 7,000 people have already arrived illegally this financial year, and at this rate, 2012 is shaping up to be a glorious year for the people smugglers.

Shadow Minister for Justice, Customs and Border Protection, Michael Keenan, blames the federal government for the development, saying Labor is providing people smugglers with record-breaking profits.

Opposition immigration spokesman Scott Morrison, meanwhile, says the latest boat arrivals show the importance of a tougher policy on refugee assessments.

The opposition's accusations follow yesterday's arrival of 130 more people in two boats and a promise of tough measures by Opposition leader Tony Abbott if he becomes prime minister.
