By: AAP | International News | Sunday August 5 2012 7:33

Syria's armed forces have pounded the a rebel-held district of Aleppo from the air and ground.

Rebel commanders say the assault has been the most violent within the district of Salaheddin since the outbreak of fighting in the northern city on July 20.

Violence has also raged in the Shaar and Sukkari districts of Aleppo, with the army using fighter jets and artillery to strike neighbourhoods.

Officials say 78 people were killed across Syria yesterday - including 45 civilians - and 84 on Friday.
