2012 Olympics hailed as new era of broadcasting

Digital coverage of the London Olympics will exceed that of traditional television for the first time.

The IOC says these Games will have over 100,000 hours of broadcast coverage available across the world.

But digital, such as online and mobile, is also expected to exceed 100,000 hours.

Director of the IOC's Television Marketing Services Timo Lumme says London's a new era of Olympic broadcasting.

"There are also a number technological firsts for example there is 3D coverage, which has been take up by a number of broadcasters around the world. We're also testing something called 'Super Hi-Vision' which is effectively super high-definition."

Beijing reached 61,000 hours of broadcast coverage available.
