Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott says he may consider a snap election if the government faces a long period of problems with the parliament.

Plans to scrap the carbon tax failed yesterday when Palmer United Party senators voted with Labor and the Greens.

Mr Abbott says if the difficulties continue for another six or 12 months then it might be time to consider a double dissolution election.
