Teenage solo around-the-world sailor Laura Dekker is on her way to New Zealand and is looking forward to returning to the place where she was born. Sixteen-year-old Dekker was born on her Dutch parents' yacht when it was docked in Whangarei, the northernmost city in New Zealand. She was raised in the Netherlands but has dual citizenship with both countries. In January Dekker sailed into St Maarten in the Caribbean on her yacht Guppy after a year and a day at sea, claiming to be the youngest person to sail around the world. Neither the Guinness Book of Records nor the World Speed Sailing Record Council recognise records for youngest sailors to discourage dangerous attempts. Dekker is expected to arrive in New Zealand before her 17th birthday on September 24. Photo: Getty Images |
