There's help for the elderly with the invention of a carpet that can help raise an alarm when they're heading for a fall. The Daily Mail reports British researchers say their invention could sound a warning before the fall, simply by monitoring a person's every step. Plastic optical fibres woven into the carpet are the key to the new system from the University of Manchester. Sensors relay signals to a computer and can show a steady deterioration or change in walking habits. The inventors believe the technology could be used in carpets at care homes and hospital wards, as well as people's homes if necessary. Photo: stock.xchng |
