Magic carpet could raise fall alarm for elderly

By: Newstalk ZB staff | International News | Wednesday September 5 2012 9:55

There's help for the elderly with the invention of a carpet that can help raise an alarm when they're heading for a fall.

The Daily Mail reports British researchers say their invention could sound a warning before the fall, simply by monitoring a person's every step.

Plastic optical fibres woven into the carpet are the key to the new system from the University of Manchester.

Sensors relay signals to a computer and can show a steady deterioration or change in walking habits.

The inventors believe the technology could be used in carpets at care homes and hospital wards, as well as people's homes if necessary.
