Heart institute boosted by secret $5m donation

By: Newstalk ZB staff | Latest Health News | Thursday September 6 2012 14:22

A five million dollar anonymous donation will go a long way to help research into the early detection and treatment of heart disease in New Zealand.

A secret benefactor has gifted the money to the new University of Otago Christchurch Heart Institute fund.

University dean Peter Joyce says the donation will be invested and the interest will help pave the way for vital research.

"Key areas that the heart institute is working on, further laboratory tests for better early diagnosis and for management of heart disease and to further explore treatments for people with heart disease."

The fund will be officially launched in Christchurch tonight.
