There has been a big jump in cardiac cases in Christchurch with a 17 percent increase recorded since 2009 and a spike since the September 2010 quake. Today is World Heart Day and St John is supporting its aims of increasing awareness of heart health, and encouraging people to take important steps to achieve it. World Heart Day was created by the World Heart Federation in 2000 to inform people around the globe that heart disease and stroke are the worldâ s leading cause of death, claiming 17.1 million lives each year. Pete Cain, St John District Operations Manager Canterbury, says St John has seen a significant increase in cardiac incidents in Christchurch since 2009. He says there was a spike in increases in cardiac related incidents in Christchurch immediately following the September 4 2010 earthquake. |
