Move to ban fast food ads from the streets

By: Newstalk ZB staff | Latest Health News | Monday August 6 2012 6:23

There's a move to ban fast food advertising from city streets and public events.

Auckland Regional Public Health wants a return to the healthy eating principles it brought in with the last Labour Government, which included banning pies in school tuck shops.

That lasted eight months before it was overturned by the National Government.

Auckland Health Board clinical director Robyn Toomath says central Government needs to take responsibility for fighting obesity.

Health officials have also raised concerns about the lack of restrictions on new fast food outlets near schools, parks and lower socioeconomic areas.
