At least 150 mothers and their babies may have been exposed to whooping cough at Middlemore Hospital. Auckland Regional Public Health Service has confirmed a health professional in maternity services has been diagnosed with the infectious disease. Clinical Director Dr Julia Peters says they've tried to identify all people who have been close contacts with the case. "Contacting all the families by phone and letter, also all the general practitioners and all the relevant lead maternity caregivers so that we are sure that people have received the advice they require." Dr Peters says everyone who may have been exposed has been contacted and given advice. "It's quite detailed advice about seeing their GP for appropriate antibiotic prophylaxis and then what they need to do should they or their baby start to develop symptoms." Photo: stock.xchng |
