A suggestion that the debate over euthanasia should concentrate on better treatment plans for those nearing the end of life. Euthanasia's back in the spotlight thanks to Maryan Street's private member's bill that would legalise some end-of-life options. New Zealand Hospice is holding a debate on the matter in Wellington tonight. Doctor and professor of palliative medicine, Baroness Ilora Finlay, says treatments have become far more advanced in the last 20 years. "Now people understand much better how to provide really good, dignified end of life care. The trouble is in our society not everyone who needs that sort of care is accessing it at the moment." Baroness Finlay says by changing the law to suit a small number of people, many more lives are put in danger. Photo: stock.xchng |
