A survey shows New Zealand nurses are battling against moral issues beyond their control. More than 400 hospital-based nurses have been surveyed by Massey University researchers with nearly half saying they've considered quitting after struggling with moral issues beyond their control. Dr Martin Woods, a nursing ethics and education expert, says moral distress is a reality nurses are struggling with and the nursing industry needs to take the findings seriously. He says the factors those surveyed cited include being unprepared for the complexities of an ethical dilemma, lack of peer and/or managerial support and difficult working conditions.
