Hopes tanning bed ban will reach NZ

By: Juliette Sivertsen | Latest Health News | Saturday February 4 2012 12:32

The Cancer Society hopes plans to ban tanning salons in Australia will prompt a similar move here.

An announcement's expected to be made shortly in New South Wales which will see solariums banned by 2014.

Society Health Promotion Manager Dr Jan Pearson says the first step towards banning them here is to have mandatory operating regulations.

She says that's what happened in New South Wales initially, and resulted in a number of places closing down or turning into spray-tan salons.

Dr Jan Pearson says the younger people are when they start using solariums, the more dangerous the results.
