Steps towards better info around suicide rates

By: Felix Marwick | Latest Health News | Tuesday April 24 2012 14:33

Steps are being taken to ensure the Government has better information around suicide rates.

Figures released today show suicide rates are trending down, however the data's almost three-years-old.

Associate Health Minister Peter Dunne says they do need to do better to get up to date statistics available, and the issue is being worked on.

"It's certainly been something that we've been in discussion with the Chief Coroner about because he has much more up to date statistics and I'm hopeful we can get to a point where the release of the material has a much shorter time lag involved."

Mr Dunne believes the credibility of suicide statistics is thrown into doubt because of the time lag.
