The National Influenza Centre is allaying fears of an influenza epidemic.
ESR's weekly influenza report shows current levels of influenza admissions are normal, and at baseline levels throughout the country.
It contradicts claims that the illness is reaching near-epidemic levels.
Dr Sue Huang says the 'H3N2' strain isn't causing any issues that haven't been foreseen.
"It does not appear to be anything extraordinary and they have not changed as much, for example, the swine flu did," she says.
Dr Huang says it's nowhere near as bad as the swine flu outbreak a few years ago.
"At the current rate it's only just a third of what happened during the 2009 pandemic. Because of that I do not really think it will really reach the epidemic level."
