Thalidomide makers issue 50-year apology

By: Newstalk ZB staff | Latest Health News | Saturday September 1 2012 11:17

After 50 years, there's an apology from the German company which made thalidomide.

The drug caused thousands of birth defects in the 1950s and 1960s after it was prescribed to pregnant women.

Now Gruenenthal Group's chief executive has offered an apology to the mothers and their children.

He's asked forgiveness for the company being unable to find a way of reaching out before now.

He says the company's long silence was a sign of the shock thalidomide caused.
