Infant formula manufacturers welcoming campaign

By: Juliette Sivertsen | Latest Health News | Friday September 28 2012 19:15

The group representing New Zealand marketers and manufacturers of infant formula is welcoming a crackdown on illegal exports of the product.

Customs and the Ministry for Primary Industries have begun an educational campaign to stop the unlawful exports from New Zealand - a trade thought to be worth over $150 million.

Infant Nutrition Council CEO Jan Carey says it's important New Zealand's reputation is protected as a reputable source of infant formula products.

"It's important that China understands that New Zealand is going to do the right thing in their exporting trade and not get things in through the backdoor. We have a partnership with the Chinese government and we want to make sure that everything we do is above board and legal."

Ms Carey says she understands most of the illegal trade is due to ignorance rather than deliberately flouting the rules.
