Tsunami system coming

By: by Caleb Allison | Latest Emergency News | Friday January 6 2012 21:30

Christchurch mayor Bob Parker says the city will have a tsunami warning system in place by the end of June.

He has addressed a briefing to the City Council by GNS scientists in Christchurch this afternoon about the latest series of aftershocks.

Bob Parker says the system has been budgeted for, and hopefully it will be near completion by the middle of the year.

But he says it is only part of the solution for residents in terms of safety, as a locally-generated tsunami is likely to be a relatively small event.

Bob Parker says Christchurch would get about 12 hours notice of a tsunami generated by a large quake near South America.
