Searchers are scouring the Waikato River after a car crashed into the water in the Hamilton suburb of Fairfield shortly before midnight.

Police pulled two people from the river with moderate injuries but a third person was seen swimming away from them.

A police boat, a harbour master's boat and firefighters are all involved in the search.
