Charter schools to be trialled behind closed doors

By: Annabel Reid | Latest Education News | Wednesday October 17 2012 6:05

Charter schools are set to be trialled behind closed doors, much to the disgust of their opponents.

Legislation on the ACT Party's pet project will come up in Parliament this week.

The Education Amendment Bill will allow for charter schools to be exempt from the Official Information Act which means taxpayers won't be able to see how the programme is running.

University of Auckland associate professor, Peter O'Connor, says charter schools are a recipe for disaster.

"At the end of the day, my sense is this is around and ideological experiment, and it's an ideological experiment the government wants to now hold in secret as well."

He says the charter schools idea is simply the result of a deal between National and ACT at the last election.

"This is a coalition deal maker, and that's what drives this now. This is nothing to do with student achievement."
