The future looks bleak for more than a hundred staff at one of New Zealand's largest private education providers.
The Practical Education Institute in New Plymouth is to close at the end of the year.
It caters for around 700 full time students.
Mayor Harry Duynhoven says it's likely many of those will go elsewhere.
"I'm not sure about the staff, how many of them will be able to be employed by other similar institutions."
Mr Duynhoven says he was surprised to hear the news.
"PEI is a long standing business in New Plymouth and I've known it since it opened and they're a company that has been very successful in the things that they've done over the years."
He is hoping to meet with PEI bosses in the near future.
