School funding a hot topic at PPTA conference

By: Sam Thompson | Latest Education News | Tuesday October 2 2012 7:36

Funding of schools will be a hot topic at the PPTA annual conference which starts today.

President Robin Duff says secondary schools are being forced to rely on community raised funds.

He say we're supposed to have free education in schools, but it's a myth.

"So this fantasy exists and essentially the Government's never really set about accurately or properly funding schools for the variety of things they want them to do and to provide for their students."

Mr Duff says schools are forced to fund raise and those in the lower socioeconomic areas are not easily able to do that.

Hekia Parata will address the conference tomorrow.

Mr Duff says they're keen to see if the minister is prepared to listen and make changes to government funding.
