Work scheme aims to attract international students

By: Katie Bradford-Crozier | Latest Education News | Thursday August 9 2012 14:49

The number of international students in Canterbury has halved since earthquakes devastated the region.

The Government's introducing a work scheme aimed at attracting students back to the area.

A trial will be run for 18 months that'll see more students given permission to work for 20 hours per week.

Immigration Minister Nathan Guy says it's a good chance for the 16 institutes involved in the scheme to be get out there and market themselves to students.

"Very similar to what happens in Australia and Australia seems to be able to attract more students than what we currently can. I think it's going to be really important for the Canterbury region to show that we are supporting them getting back on their feet."
