Criticism for Banks over interest on student loans

By: Sam Thompson | Latest Education News | Tuesday April 24 2012 5:14

Act leader John Banks is under fire for pushing for the re-introduction of interest on student loans.

The Tertiary Women's Focus Group says Mr Banks clearly has no idea about the real impact a student loan can have on an individual's life.

Spokeswoman Ta'ase Vaoga says they are are often prevented from starting families, buying first homes and saving money due to their student debt.

She says women take longer in general to pay back their loan, because they are more likely to stay at home with kids before returning to work, but with interest their debt will be stretched out longer.

Ms Vaoga says interest on student loans will make Tertiary Education elitist.
