Christchurch City councillors have slammed the way in which the Ministry of Education has gone about the controversial schools shake-up in the city.
In a strongly-worded letter which was unanimously endorsed by the full council, it demands Education Minister Hekia Parata rethink the timing of the closures and mergers.
Councillor Yani Johansson says if nothing changes, Christchurch could find itself in another terrible situation.
"If these changes go through in the time frame they go through, we are going to have another disaster in our city. A social disaster.
"We should be quite adamant that we do not agree with these proposed changes and mergers in terms of the time frames, and that they need to hold off."
