Education Minister Hekia Parata is considering a return to basics in maths teaching. It follows a study which puts New Zealand nine-year-olds last in maths amongst children in developed countries. The Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study found significant proportions of Year 5 kids can't add or subtract simple numbers. Hekia Parata says the results are extremely concerning.
