Parata concerned as Kiwi kids come last in maths

By: Newstalk ZB staff | Latest Education News | Saturday February 23 2013 8:28

Education Minister Hekia Parata is considering a return to basics in maths teaching.

It follows a study which puts New Zealand nine-year-olds last in maths amongst children in developed countries.

The Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study found significant proportions of Year 5 kids can't add or subtract simple numbers.

Hekia Parata says the results are extremely concerning.

The New Zealand Herald reports she's asked officials to talk to Auckland educator Dr Des Rainey about his multiplication and division memorisation system.
