Police armed themselves for axe-wielder call

By: Lesley Deverall | Latest Crime News | Monday October 29 2012 14:20

Police have confirmed officers armed themselves with guns when responding to reports of an axe-wielding man man going berserk inside a Whangamata bank.

There were four staff inside when the 53-year-old man entered the Port Road BNZ branch just after 10am.

Three were able to flee but the fourth remained inside as the man smashed a number of windows and the front counter.

Police don't believe he made any threats to the staff.

Detective Sergeant Martyn Hughes says it appears a member of the public secured the bank's front doors to prevent the offender escaping.

He's now being interviewed by police.
