Appeal dismissed for convicted Auckland woman

By: Blair Cunningham | Latest Crime News | Friday June 1 2012 13:55

An Auckland woman convicted of child abuse has failed in her bid to appeal her sentence.

The woman, who has five children, was sentenced last October to seven years and six months behind bars.

She faced three counts of cruelty to a child; two of injuring with intent to cause grievous bodily harm; seven of assault; eight of assault with a weapon and five of injuring with intent to injure.

One daughter in particular was targeted and the court was told the woman frequently punched and kicked her; held her head under water and dragged her along the floor by the head.

The woman's lawyer asked for her previous good behaviour and her own history of being abused to be taken into consideration.

The appeal was dismissed.
