Child pornographers to face tougher penalties

By: Felix Marwick | Latest Crime News | Tuesday August 28 2012 16:43

The Government is increasing the maximum penalties for child pornography offences.

Justice Minister Judith Collins says a new offence will be created and it'll become an offence for an adult to have indecent communication with a child.

The maximum jail term for possessing, importing, or exporting an objectionable publication will be doubled to 10 years and presumption of imprisonment will be applied to repeat offenders.

Also to be changed is the definition of possession of illegal material .

It'll become an offence to intentionally view child pornography over the internet without the material being downloaded or saved.
