A 41-year-old inmate at Hawke's Bay Prison has been charged after allegedly assaulting an prison officer earlier this week.
The attack left the officer with a fractured eye socket and a deep cut to his cheek.
The inmate has been charged with injuring with intent and will appear in the Hastings District Court next week.
