By: Adam Walker | Latest Crime News | Monday October 1 2012 11:54

Social media is proving a fruitful tool for police when it comes to apprehending criminals on the run.

The Rotorua Police Facebook page currently has just a touch under 700 'likes' and has reached more than 15,000 people through the site.

Inspector Ed Van Den Broek says the Facebook is proving beneficial for both the police and the public.

"We've been able to get some crime prevention advice through as well as locating some people that we were after. The last week's postings, the people were apprehended."

Inspector Van Den Broek says the Facebook page has also helped their increase their profile throughout the community.
