Judges need better sex crime education - expert

| Latest Crime News | Saturday July 21 2012 6:05

A rape prevention educator says there needs better training for judges to deal with sex crimes.

Kim McGregor's call follows comment from Judge Mark Perkins, ahead of sentencing for a comedian who admitted sexually assaulting his four-year-old daughter.

He says the man's sentence will be based on the effect of break up of the child's family on the child rather than that of the offending.

Dr McGregor says that sort of comment suggest the court has not accessed any experts who could inform it of the common effects of sexual assaults on children.

"We think that's absolutely essential that we have specialists who understand the dynamic effects of sexual violence."
