Elderly man jailed for sex offences

By: Sophie Lowery | Latest Crime News | Friday January 25 2013 11:54

An elderly Napier man who kept intricate diaries of sexual offending against young boys has been sentenced to four years and nine months in jail.

The 84-year-old, who has name suppression, last month pleaded guilty to over a dozen charges of indecently assaulting three boys over an 11 year period.

He groomed the boys with gifts, cash, hospitality and flattery.

In sentencing today at the Napier District Court, Judge Tony Adeane declined an offer of $12,000 reparation for emotional harm, because he said money had no worth in this instance.

Judge Adeane says the case is enormously sad for all involved, because the man's relationship with his four children has broken down as a result, and his jail sentence will dominate his remaining years.

The principal victim's family was in court today, and his mother says her son's childhood has been stolen from him.
