Mongrel Mob member jailed for 13 years

By: Sophie Lowery | Latest Crime News | Thursday October 18 2012 12:36

A Hastings Mongrel Mob member has been sentenced to 13 years jail for a vicious assault on the mother of his twins that caused her to lose an eye.

Sio Muliipu was found guilty at a jury trial two months ago of kidnapping, assaulting and stabbing his partner in the eye last year.

At sentencing in the High Court at Napier today, Justice David Collins told the 24-year-old the attack was unprovoked and involved a gratuitous level of violence.

Justice Collins says the sentence denounces Mr Muliipu's actions and sends a message to society that this sort of behaviour will not be tolerated.

He chose not to impose a sentence of preventative detention, but did impose a minimum non-parole period of seven years.
