Arrest following shooting

By: Joe Gilfillan | Latest Crime News | Sunday April 15 2012 22:24

Police have arrested a 13 year-old boy over the fatal shooting of a 50 year-old woman this afternoon near rural Okoki in Northern Taranaki.

Detective Senior Sergeant Grant Coward of the New Plymouth CIB says the boy is not related to the woman but is known to her.

He will appear in the New Plymouth District Court tomorrow.

The woman is understood to be the boy's caregiver.

Police were advised of the fatal shooting shortly after 3.30 this afternoon.

The house where the tragedy happened remains under guard tonight, and there will be further forensic examinations there and also of a car impounded in Waitara over the next few days.

The woman's body will be recovered from the scene tomorrow for a post mortem examination.

Police are keen to hear from anyone who saw a white 1993 Ford Telstar car driven from the victim's home to Waitara between 3.30 and 5.30 this afternoon.
